6 Shocking Stories of Deepfake Technology Ethical Concerns with AI

Deepfake Technology Poses Shocking Ethical Concerns That Few Are Talking About.

From undermining public trust to ruining personal lives, deepfakes are a Pandora’s box of ethical challenges. Will AI be capable to detect what is real or what is manipulated?

The Rise of Deepfakes: A Double-Edged Sword

Deepfakes have taken the internet by storm, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fake content.

Powered by artificial intelligence, deepfakes leverage machine learning algorithms to create realistic but entirely fake audio, video, and images.

While some applications are harmless or even entertaining—think of putting your face on your favorite actor in a movie—others are far from benign.

The potential misuse of deepfakes in politics, media, and personal vendettas poses significant threats to society.

In my own test to see if I could easily manipulate video and audio with openly available AI tools, I revised an existing Donald Trump speech in which he quotes Corinthians 13 infused with a soft loving personality. I even have Trump quote Sanskrit, although the software did not pronounce it correctly.

Using a free website that had a pre-generated Trump voice, I entered text that output an audio file then imported the audio and a pre-existing video speech into  Synclabs, a video lip sync app.

The audio failed to perfectly sync with Trump's lips because the audio was simply too fast. The video was time consuming to make, yet completely possible.

The video was uploaded to Youtube with full clarification that the video is deepfake.

Can AI Really Save Us?

AI offers some solutions for detecting deepfakes, but this battle is like a cat-and-mouse game.

Every time AI develops a new detection technique, deepfake creators find a way to bypass it.

For instance, researchers are working on AI tools that analyze visual inconsistencies, audio mismatches, and biometric markers to flag deepfakes.

Yet, these methods are not foolproof, and their effectiveness diminishes as deepfake technology evolves.

The real question isn’t just whether AI can detect deepfakes, but whether it can do so reliably enough to mitigate the harm they cause.

This leads us into murky waters where ethical concerns arise, including privacy violations, consent, and the potential for AI itself to be weaponized.

Ethical Dilemmas: More Than Just a Technical Challenge

The deepfake technology ethical concerns extends beyond the practical uses and capabilities of AI.

It’s about the broader implications on trust, security, and morality in a digital age.

Who gets to decide what is real and what is fake?

How do we protect individuals from malicious deepfakes that can ruin lives?

And perhaps most worryingly, what happens when deepfakes are used to manipulate public opinion or destabilize governments?

Here are six real-life examples of deepfake technology abuse that illustrate these shocking AI ethical concerns:

6 Shocking Deepfake Technology Stories and Ethical Concerns with AI

Deepfake Revenge Porn: A Devastating Tool of Harassment

In 2020, a deepfake revenge porn case in Pennsylvania shocked the nation when a mother, Raffaela Spone, used deepfake technology to harass her daughter’s cheerleading rivals.

Spone created deepfake videos and images of the girls drinking, smoking, and posing nude, then anonymously sent them to the girls’ coaches in an attempt to have them removed from the team.

While Spone was eventually caught and charged, the damage to the victims was already done.

The deepfakes caused emotional distress and reputational harm to the young girls, demonstrating how easily accessible deepfake technology can be weaponized in personal vendettas.

This case raises serious ethical questions about the accessibility of deepfake technology and the potential for abuse by individuals with malicious intent.

Deepfake Scams: CEO Impersonation That Cost $243,000

In March 2019, a UK-based energy firm’s CEO fell victim to a deepfake scam that resulted in a loss of $243,000.

The scammers used AI-generated audio to mimic the voice of the CEO’s German parent company’s chief executive.

The deepfake audio convincingly instructed the UK CEO to transfer the funds to a Hungarian supplier, claiming it was an urgent matter.

Believing he was following legitimate instructions, the CEO complied.

The money was later transferred to Mexico, and the perpetrators vanished without a trace.

This case is a glaring example of how deepfakes can be used for financial gain, exploiting the trust that exists within business hierarchies.

It also highlights the challenges of detecting audio deepfakes, which can sound almost indistinguishable from the real thing.

Scarlett Johansson’s Deepfake Nightmare: Non-Consensual Pornography

Celebrities are frequent targets of deepfake creators, particularly in the realm of non-consensual pornography.

Scarlett Johansson has been a victim of this abuse, with her likeness being used in explicit deepfake videos circulated on adult websites.

These videos, created without her consent, violate her privacy and tarnish her public image.

Johansson has spoken out against these deepfakes, highlighting the emotional distress and sense of powerlessness they cause.

Despite legal actions against websites hosting such content, the nature of the internet makes it nearly impossible to completely eradicate these videos.

This case underscores the ethical dilemma of deepfake pornography: the devastating impact on victims and the difficulty of legal recourse when content spreads across multiple platforms globally.

The Malicious Deepfake of Rana Ayyub: Silencing Journalists

Indian journalist Rana Ayyub became the target of a deepfake campaign designed to discredit her and silence her critical voice.

In 2018, a deepfake video featuring her in an explicit context circulated widely on social media, sparking harassment and death threats.

The video was created in response to Ayyub’s outspoken criticism of the Indian government, and its spread was intended to intimidate her into silence.

Ayyub reported the incident to the police, but the damage was already done.

The deepfake not only endangered her safety but also served as a chilling message to other journalists who might dare to speak out.

This example illustrates the potential of deepfakes to be used as tools of oppression and intimidation, threatening freedom of speech and the safety of individuals.

A Deepfake of Barack Obama: The Power to Shape Narratives

In 2018, filmmaker Jordan Peele collaborated with BuzzFeed to create a deepfake of former President Barack Obama.

The video showed Obama delivering a public service announcement in which he appeared to say things that he never actually said.

The purpose of this deepfake was educational, aiming to raise awareness about the potential dangers of the technology.

However, it also demonstrated how convincingly deepfakes can mimic public figures, potentially spreading false information with high credibility.

Imagine a similar deepfake being used maliciously during an election season—how easily could it sway voters, destabilize campaigns, or even influence international relations?

This deepfake highlights the immense power of such content to shape narratives and influence public opinion on a large scale.

A Deepfake Call in the UK Parliament: Threat to National Security

In 2021, a deepfake call nearly infiltrated the highest levels of the UK government.

A video call was set up between British MP Tom Tugendhat and someone posing as Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Tugendhat, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, only realized he was speaking to a deepfake when the real Navalny confirmed that no such meeting had been scheduled.

Though no sensitive information was exchanged, the incident raised alarms about the potential for deepfakes to breach national security.

If deepfakes can be used to impersonate public figures, they could easily be exploited by state actors to spread disinformation or extract sensitive information from officials.

This case serves as a warning of the vulnerabilities in our systems and the need for robust measures to authenticate identities in virtual meetings.

The Ethical Dilemmas Few Are Talking About

The ethical dilemmas surrounding deepfakes are as complex as the technology itself.

One major issue is the accessibility of deepfake tools, which are becoming increasingly easy to use.

This democratization of technology means that anyone with basic computer skills can create convincing deepfakes, raising concerns about misuse and accountability.

There’s also the problem of detection. AI-based detection systems are not foolproof and can often be outpaced by the evolving sophistication of deepfake creation tools.

This creates a perpetual game of cat and mouse, where the creators of deepfakes continually find new ways to evade detection.

Moreover, there’s the question of consent and privacy. Deepfakes are often created without the knowledge or consent of the individuals depicted, violating their privacy and personal autonomy.

The law has not caught up with the technology, leaving victims with limited legal options to protect themselves or seek justice.

Finally, there’s the issue of trust.

As deepfake technology ethical concerns become more prevalent, they have the potential to erode trust in all media, making it increasingly difficult for people to discern truth from fiction.

This erosion of trust could have profound implications for society, from undermining democratic processes to damaging personal relationships.

Can AI Be the Solution?

While AI offers tools to combat deepfakes, it’s not a silver bullet.

The ethical dilemmas, privacy concerns, and technical challenges mean that relying solely on AI is not enough.

A multifaceted approach is needed, combining technology, regulation, education, and public awareness to effectively address the deepfake problem.

Ultimately, the question of whether AI can save us from deepfakes is not just about technology; it’s about how society chooses to use and regulate these powerful tools.

It’s a battle for truth, trust, and ethical responsibility. And that’s a battle we all have a stake in.
